Our History

Scuba Junkie SEAS is the dedicated conservation arm of the award-winning 5* PADI dive centre, Scuba Junkie. Scuba Junkie Semporna was the first location of the Scuba Junkie family. It was founded in 2004 by two individuals passionate about creating a dive shop that not only offered safe and thrilling diving experiences but also prioritised environmental sustainability. Building on its success, the Mabul Beach Resort was established in 2008, incorporating environmentally friendly practices from its inception.

This commitment to conservation culminated in the establishment of Scuba Junkie SEAS in 2009, initially focused on enhancing protection for sharks and rays in the Semporna region. Since then, Scuba Junkie SEAS has expanded its conservation efforts to include community outreach, turtle conservation, coral conservation and addressing the issue of marine debris. It remains an integral part of the broader Scuba Junkie family, embodying the collective commitment to responsible diving and environmental stewardship.

Eco-Resort

Scuba Junkie is committed to sustainable tourism by using eco-friendly practices in running its resort such as solar power, recycling, repurposing rainwater, going seafood free and supporting local conservation efforts.

Marine Debris

We work with visitors, the local community and organisations to manage and record marine debris through regular cleanups and education. We are passionate in exploring upcycling solutions to address the devastating impact of debris on marine ecosystems.

Turtles

We contribute to protecting endangered sea turtles through citizen science engagement via a turtle ID database, maintaining a turtle hatchery for the protection of nests and safe release of hatchlings and running a turtle rehab center.

Sharks

As the founding conservation initiative of Scuba Junkie SEAS, we aim to protect sharks through maintaining a sightings database, research, public awareness, and promoting sustainable tourism practices that do not harm shark populations.

Corals

Promoting sustainable dive practices is crucial to protect coral reefs. We conduct research to understand the impact of climate change on coral health and restore damaged reefs through coral transplantation, contributing to the protection of the fragile marine environment.

Outreach

Appreciation for marine ecosystems is the first step to their protection. We offer outreach programs to educate the local community and conservation groups on marine life and the impact of human activities on reef health.
