Course breakdown

Coral conservation presentation

This presentation will give you some background about coral reefs – their biology, their role in the marine ecosystem and their importance – not just from a biological perspective, but from human economic perspective too. The presentation will also look at some of the threats to coral reefs worldwide, and what can be done to mitigate these threats and aid conservation of these incredible structures.

Coral gardening

During the workshop you will participate in coral transplanting and/or coral gardening. Just like a terrestrial garden, our coral nursery needs regular maintenance to remove silt, marine debris and coral competitors, like sponges and tunicates, which can outgrow corals. Once a month we also collect size data for our corals so we can monitor growth and survival rates.
