To celebrate Earth Day 2018 we have organised a day of reef and beach clean-ups, in addition to our weekly plastic-free community market where the local community sell sustainable handicrafts, burgers, fried banana and coconuts. Handicrafts include decorative coconut bowls and handwoven pandan mats, bags, purses and bracelets. Plastic bags, plastic straws and souvenirs sourced from the ocean are not permitted. This project is part of our ongoing Pulauku rumahku (My Island, My Home) initiative. We will also have an evening awareness talk entitled ‘Tackling marine debris’ by our Conservation Manager, Dave.
Earth Day is an annual global event aimed at inspiring people, businesses and governments to take action towards environmental sustainability. It is believed that more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.
